Synopsis from online:

"This is a remarkable work of Gothic fantasy, historical fiction, and social satire, the novel reimagines themes from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein through the extraordinary life of Bella Baxter, a young woman mysteriously brought to life by an eccentric Victorian physician.

Set primarily in nineteenth-century Glasgow, the novel combines an imaginative narrative with competing historical accounts, philosophical speculation, and Gray's distinctive illustrations and book design. Winner of both the 1992 Whitbread Novel Award and Guardian Fiction Prize, Poor Things is widely considered one of Gray's finest literary achievements.

The novel inspired the celebrated 2023 film adaptation directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress."
