Both volumes bound in 3/4 leather and marbled boards. Leather spine with gold lettering and ruling with 4 raised bands. All edges gilt. Vol.1 has pages 19-464, vol. 2, 467-858. Two-thirds of the first volume is devoted to the history of California and its institutions; the balance consists of biographies of famous and influential citizens. Illustrated with engravings of many of the prominent citizens. Volume 1 has a small tear on the blank page opposite the title page. A few pages internally have some light spotting. The boards do have some light rubbing on the leather and the marbled portions. Very solid and still-attractive copies of these classic California history books with a little wear.
