This is an *inrō* (traditional Japanese tiered case) featuring *maki-e* (lacquerwork with sprinkled metal powder) designs of a folding fan and a dragonfly.
It is an antique, four-tiered wooden *inrō* that showcases exceptionally refined craftsmanship.
The surface, which reveals a beautiful wood grain, is decorated on one side with a *kin-taka-maki-e* (raised gold lacquer) motif of a folding fan (*suehiro*), and on the other with an inlay and *maki-e* depiction of a dragonfly—an insect traditionally considered a symbol of good fortune and victory (*kachimushi*).
The interior of the *inrō* is finished in a *nashiji* style—a technique using sprinkled gold powder—which gives it a brilliant, luxurious appearance and reflects its high status.
This valuable set also includes an *ojime* (sliding bead) in vermilion lacquer, carved with an auspicious character, as well as a *manju*-style *netsuke* (toggle) crafted from the same material as the *inrō* and adorned with a floral *maki-e* design.
As this is an antique piece, it exhibits minor signs of wear and the natural patina characteristic of its age.
