This is a hand-carved wooden wall-hanging mask of an *oni* (demon/ogre).
It is a striking piece, carved from a single block of natural wood. Meticulously crafted over time, the mask features a powerful expression, complete with two sharp horns, thick brows, deeply set eyes, and fangs finished in a gold-pigment style.
Since ancient times, *oni* masks have been cherished as auspicious objects—believed to ward off evil, misfortune, and negative energy—and are traditionally displayed in entryways, living rooms, or *tokonoma* (alcoves).
