Common Signs of a Bad Right Crank Arm
- Side-to-side play: Grab the right crank arm and rock it back and forth. If you feel loose movement or wobble, the arm or spindle interface is worn. [1]
- Clicking or creaking noises: A rhythmic click, pop, or creak while pedaling under load often points to a damaged crank arm or a loose crank bolt. [1, 2]
- Loose or wobbly pedal: If the pedal jiggles or feels uneven even after you tighten it with a 15mm wrench, the metal threads inside the aluminum crank arm may be stripped. [1]
- Visual damage or metal shavings: Inspect the area around the crank bolt and chain guard. Finding fine metal dust or shavings often means the crank assembly is rubbing or failing. [1]
- Check the crank bolt: Use an 8mm Allen wrench to see if the main bolt holding the right crank arm to the spindle is tight. [1, 2]
- Check the pedal threads: Unscrew the right pedal and look at the threads on both the pedal and the crank arm. If the threading looks chewed up or smooth, the crank arm is ruined and needs replacement.[1]
- Isolate bottom bracket play: Rock the crank arm to ensure the movement is coming from the arm itself and not the internal bottom bracket or bearing cartridge. [1, 2]
