Nikon Eyepiece Correction Lens +2 for F3 (Eye-Level 19mm)
Viewfinder
Made in/ Used in/ Shipping from Japan
Overview
This is the Nikon eyepiece correction lens +2 for the F3, one of the nine lenses of the series, made in Japan. It screws into the round 19mm eyepiece of the standard eye-level finder and fits the F3 and F3AF with the eye-level finder and the FA, FE, FE2, FM, FM2, New FM2, FM2/T and FM3A. Nikon also states that the F3 or FM2/FM3A correction lenses may be used on older cameras such as the F2 and the Nikkormats (Nikomats). The F3 manual lists nine lenses in the series: -5, -4, -3, -2, 0, +0.5, +1, +2 and +3 diopters.
Please do not confuse the two ways of adjusting a viewfinder. A diopter adjustment is the knob built into many cameras. A correction lens, which is what this is, is a separate lens that screws onto the eyepiece for cameras with no built-in adjustment; Nikon notes that such cameras, for example the FM3A, have a viewfinder set at -1 diopter as standard, and the plain eyepiece glass supplied with them has no value. The figure on a Nikon correction lens is the combined diopter of the finder and the lens, not the power of the lens alone. A plus value is for farsighted eyes and a minus value is for nearsighted eyes. By Nikon's chart the lens value runs one diopter below the eyeglass prescription: a +0 lens suits a prescription of +1, a prescription of 0 needs the -1 lens and a prescription of -1 needs the -2 lens, and the +2 lens is for a more strongly farsighted eye. Nikon's US site adds that a neutral (0) lens changes the camera's standard -1 diopter to 0, that the figure on the lens is the end result so nothing has to be added to or subtracted from the camera's -1, and that the value to choose is the diopter an optician finds for you when viewing an object about one metre away. If you are unsure, ask a dealer or try several lenses on the camera. Do not confuse it with the 22mm lens made for the F3HP (high eyepoint finder DE-3): the two sizes are different parts and are not interchangeable.
Compatibility
Fits Nikon SLRs with a round 19mm eyepiece thread: F3 and F3AF with the eye-level finder, FA, FE, FE2, FM, FM2, New FM2, FM2/T and FM3A. Nikon also states that the F3 or FM2/FM3A correction lenses may be used on older cameras such as the F2 and Nikkormats (Nikomats). It does not fit the F3HP (high-eyepoint finder DE-3), which takes a 22mm correction lens, or the rectangular-eyepiece bodies.
