Jaguar driver Mike Hawthorne braked heavily getting into the pits after overtaking Lance Macklin’s Austin Healey, this caused Macklin to swerve into the path of Mercedes driver Pierre Levegh, the speed and angle of the collision sent Levegh’s car launching into the air hitting the concrete embankment and smashed into pieces directly into the watching crowd. Levegh and 83 spectators lost their lives another 120 were injured and the outcome was to change the safety requirements of racing and many modifications to tracks took place. The history of this piece makes it a very special collection item.
