Brand New In Original Packaging – MINOR DAMAGE

This otherwise pristine wagon does have some very minor damage to one of the brake gear peices. It has broken off in the packaging so we have placed it in a small plastic bag to keep it safe. There are locating pins on it and corresponding holes on the chassis, but you will need a steady hand to slot it into position. The corresponding axle spring on this wheel does not spring back particularly well compared with the other three. During inspection, the buffers seem to have a tendency to pop out of their sockets, so it might be wise to add a small dab of glue to the inside of the locating holes. I have added some pieces of foam to the packaging to help them stay in place in transport. Please see final photos for close ups of the minor damage to the brake gear. The first close up photo shows how the brake gear should look (the in tact side), the second shows the damaged side and the third and fourth show the part itself.

Due to this minor damage, we have reduced the price by £10.

Introduced in 12 separate batches between 1954 and 1965, a total of 5,263 of these 24.5-ton capacity hoppers were built for British Railways (BR), with 11 of the batches constructed at the company’s Shildon wagon works and one – the last – built by Pressed Steel. The wagons represented by the Accurascale model are the 1/148 (revised) and 1/154 patterns assembled at Sildon from 1958 to 1962, which totalled 3,416 wagons.

Originally designated ‘HOP24’, these hoppers were classified ‘HUO’ under BR’s Total Operations Processing System (TOPS) upon its introduction in 1973. Tasked mainly with hauling coal and coke from collieries and coke plants to power station and ports throughout Great Britain, they displaced older open wagons from such services and are regarded as precursors to modern ‘Merry-go-Round’ (MGR) coal hoppers. However, unlike MGR wagons they were not fitted with continuous vacuum or air braking, and so were required to operate with a brake van as part of the formation – sometimes with one at either end of the rake. They also found use in domestic coal traffic serving coal concentration depots, as well as carrying limestone from locations such as Wirksworth in Derbyshire. In service, they were observed operating in block trains as well as in mixed formations with 21-ton hoppers and larger mineral open wagons.

HUO hoppers were among the last unfitted wagons in regular use with BR, with workings recorded as late as 1987. Following withdrawal from mainline use, some went on to operate as internal use wagons at a number of collieries and the Coalite plant at Bolsover, where they survived in service for several more years.

What to do if your postage has become very expensive - especially important for buyers outside the UK

If you are placing a particularly large order, the postage may get a bit out of hand. If this is the case, please DO NOT use the "Request Total" feature (located near the top right of the basket page). Unfortunately, this feature does not work properly for us on eBay and has consistently caused us significant problems.

In the event of your postage being very high, please send me a message through eBay including a list of the part numbers you are interested in purchasing. I will then create a bespoke listing just for you so that I can properly control the postage cost and you will buy "one item" on eBay which includes all the parts you require. For buyers wanting to purchase 10 or more items at once, you will also receive a 10% discount for using this system.

Despatch time

Despatch is within 3 working days from payment, so you should receive your item(s) within 5 working days for the UK, dependent upon Royal Mail or any other carrier we may use and current circumstances. We cannot guarantee delivery dates as once an item is posted it is in the hands of the delivery company.

For international customers deliveries are likely to be significantly longer, dependent upon carriers and current circumstances.

Returns + Other Services

Domestic returns are accepted on all of our goods if returned undamaged, unopened and in the original packaging. Domestic returns are only accepted within 30 days of receiving your order. You will be responsible for the return postage unless exceptional circumstances apply. Please get in touch as soon as possible if you wish to return an item and we will sort things our for you quickly and easily.

We do not accept international returns unless the item is damaged or not as described. Please contact us as soon as possible and we will sort things out for you quickly and easily.
