Historical Context:

The 20 Reis black belongs to Brazil’s classic “Verticais” numeral series. The denomination has an especially interesting postal history: the 20 Reis value was originally associated with an additional charge for home delivery and, from 1866, was authorized for ordinary postal franking.

During 1866, existing Brazilian numeral stamps were also issued with postal perforations before and alongside the introduction of the new Dom Pedro II portrait stamps. These perforated numeral issues have become an important specialized area of Brazilian Imperial philately.

Condition:

A visually attractive used example with the large “20” denomination remaining very clear and prominent.

The black cancellation crosses portions of the upper and right-hand areas of the stamp while leaving most of the central numeral readily visible.

Perforations are present on all four sides, with some naturally irregular or shortened teeth visible. The reverse shows normal age-related paper toning.

No major tear or obvious pinhole is visible in the supplied scans. Possible thinning, pressed creases, repairs or other characteristics that cannot be conclusively determined from photographs have not been certified.

The perforation has not been independently authenticated.

Please examine the high-resolution front and back images carefully.

Catalog & Identification Notice:

This stamp appears consistent with the Brazil 1866 20 Reis black perforated numeral issue – possible Scott 43 / RHM 12B.

This attribution is based on the denomination, design, color, period and comparison with specialized philatelic references.

Original perforated examples of this series are a specialized field of Brazilian philately, and later or false perforations are known. Therefore, Legacy Collectibles does not guarantee the authenticity or period of the perforation unless accompanied by an independent expert certificate.

Catalog attribution is provided as a best-effort reference only. The buyer should independently verify the perforation, paper, cancellation and catalog classification.
