Insurance Railway Map 1895 - a rare piece of London history

A Victorian folding pocket map showing the overground and underground railway lines of London and surrounding districts, with advertising on the verso for insurance, railways and other.

An advert for Gresham Life Office is dated 1895.

The map doesn’t distinguish between underground and overground lines. Routes shown (though not named) include underground lines then open:

Metropolitan line (opened in 1863 as the world's first underground railway, running from Paddington to Farringdon).
District Line (opened 1868 from South Kensington to Westminster). The verso includes adverts for this “District Railway.”
Circle line (opened 1864).
Northern line (opened 1890)

Stations or lines now closed include:

Crouch End. This line is now the Parkland Walk.
Snow Hill (closed 1916)
Waterloo Junction. The single-track rail link and junction between London Waterloo and Waterloo East closed in 1911, and is now pedestrian.

Dimensions: width 38cm and height 36cm

Sold w.a.f. By normal standards, condition is poor. However, this was a “throwaway” item, cheaply-produced and not meant to last. It seems likely that few copies have survived at all!

Printed on fragile, creased browned paper and repaired along the folds and edges with archival tape, with some loss of text (mainly along the vertical fold east of Waterloo, please see photos).

After the above repairs, the map is currently not folded.
