19th Century Italian Grand Tour Bronze Renaissance Romanesque Inkwell
This is a Grand tour Italian bronze inkwell of Romanesque renaissance design, circa late 1800's.
The body is supported on three hoofed legs and decorated with projecting bull head protomes with classical cherub masks. The domed removable cover is surmounted by a sculptural group of a goat & a putti raising a bunch of grapes, giving the piece a distinctly Bacchic / Dionysian character.
The overall design draws heavily on Roman and Renaissance decorative vocabulary, combining animal heads, masks, hoofed supports and putti in the manner popular with Grand Tour bronzes made for the European and British market during the 19th century.
The bronze has a rich dark patina.
CONDITION The liner is missing & the lid is not fitting the base properly, the original liner may have had a lip in which the lid sat originally
The overall condition is as you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners.
