The EMPIRE, clamp-on fluting iron, Stikes Back, and it’s not far, far away

Here, in a striking way, this robust clamp-on fluting iron has returned from obscurity into the public eye.  From its bold, brass rollers to the original black base coat and red trim, comes a prominent but scarce clamp-on fluter.  Rather than the standard 6-inch rollers, the Empire used massive 4 1/2 inch rollers.  This fluter is not easy to find.  It is stocky and substantial compared to other similar models.  This still sports traces of pinstripes and stenciling on top.  It is rich with more than a century of patina.  A tarnished coating and staining are worn like armor to outlast the test of time.

By pulling downward on the right-side lever, the brass rollers will separate.  The top roller will rise off the base roller to allow damp, pre-starched fabric to be inserted for fluting.  Returning the lever to its upward starting position re-engages the two rollers to create ruffles and pleats on collars, cuffs, and dress hemlines.

Own this yourself, and the "Force will be with you."
