The baby COMPANION, clamp-on fluting iron, your ironing-day partner

Your friend has arrived.  Not the full-size Companion with 6-inch rollers.  This is the small version and only had 3-inch fluter rollers.  When it came a point to add embellishment to collars, cuffs and dress hemlines, your smaller buddy was standing by, buckled in to assist.  The Companion fluting machine was one of nearly a half dozen different varieties of ‘clamp-on’ fluters.  And this brand even came in a left-or-right handed models.  Its ‘open-access’ design, a distinctive characteristic of European fluters, provided garments an easy entry.

Surface areas showcase original stenciling.  The fluter rollers are only a mere 3 inches.

This fluter is not easy to find.  It is rich with more than a century of patina.  A light tarnish, coating and stain are worn like armor to outlast the test of time.

By depressing the rear lever downward, the brass rollers would separate.  The top roller would rise off the base roller to allow damp, pre-starched fabric to be inserted for fluting.  Returning the lever to its upward starting position re-engages the two rollers to begin creating ruffles and pleats on collars, cuffs and dress hemlines.
