19th Century Spanish Colonial Carved & Inlaid Holy Family Altar Panel

This is an impressive Spanish colonial baroque revival, relief carved, inlaid & polychromed devotional wood panel.  Depicting the Holy Family with the Christ Child, set within a deeply carved architectural surround of scrolling foliage and stylised leaves.

The central scene shows Joseph seated beside Mary and the young Christ, the figures modelled in high relief and retaining substantial areas of old red, brown, green and black polychrome decoration. The faces and hands are formed from contrasting bovine bone, giving the figures a particularly striking appearance.

The surrounding frame is integral to the carving and is unusually elaborate, with large scrolling foliate motifs arranged symmetrically around the arched central scene. The reverse is entirely hand worked and shows extensive tool marks, consistent with traditional hand carving.

CONDITION in good order - as per images

The overall condition is as you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners.
