Follows Johnny Breakes, whose unauthorized entry into what appears to be a deserted seaside house quickly turns into something far more dangerous. Instead of finding an empty refuge, Johnny discovers several bodies and then learns that the house has living occupants as well. Before long, he and two young women become entangled in an increasingly perilous situation, pursued by the police while also apparently marked as the next victims of a killer with a taste for violence.

Combining crime, mystery, and fast-moving suspense, the novel builds its story around hidden motives, dangerous strangers, unexpected discoveries, and the growing threat surrounding Johnny and his companions. Originally published in 1953 and later adapted for the 1954 British film Johnny on the Spot, the story is representative of mid-century British crime entertainment, and this 1958 Beacon Books edition presents the novel complete and unabridged.
