Antique 18th / Early 19th Century French Pewter Lidded Porringer (Écuelle à Oreilles) with Maker's Touchmark
Description:
Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible period antique French pewter lidded porringer. This traditional two-handled covered bouillon bowl (historically known as an écuelle) features an incredibly detailed relief design across the lid(lid finial warped) and handles, executed in the classic late-Baroque Jean Bérain style.
A major highlight of this piece is the authentic antique maker's touchmark hand-struck on the inside bottom basin. The stamp features specialized guild emblems encased inside a classic beaded/dotted oval border, a hallmark of master European craftsmen from the late 1700s to early 1800s.
Visible concentric lathe-turning lines surround the mark, confirming its traditional hand-finished manufacturing heritage.
The lid is beautifully proportioned, featuring a relief profile medallion finial serving as the handle knob. The flanking flat side handles (ears) are heavily cast with stylized ornamental scrollwork and portrait details.
Condition Report:
Excellent antique condition considering its significant age. Shows an authentic, uncleaned deep grey oxidation patina with minor historic surface scuffs and handling wear consistent with period utility. No major dents, cracks, or repairs observed. The lid fits properly onto the basin but the top tip is warped.
