Gaahleri Atlas Painting Handle – CNC Aluminium, Magnetic, 360° Ratchet

A solid aluminium painting handle with a clicking 360° ratchet, a magnetic dock platform, a weighted base that stops it tipping over, and a storage compartment inside the grip.

Your model stays where you put it. The ratchet rotates a full 360° in firm, tactile clicks. You turn the model to the next face and it holds that angle mid-stroke instead of drifting while you paint an eye or an edge highlight.

Move the work without touching wet paint. The magnetic platform lets you lift a dock (and the model on it) off the handle and put it down to dry, then click the next one on.

It doesn't fall over. The wide, weighted aluminium base keeps it upright on the desk, even with a top-heavy model on it. That's the classic way painted work gets ruined on lighter handles.

Built to last. Machined from solid aluminium, so it survives drops, and brush cleaner or thinner on the handle won't soften or mark it the way it can on printed plastic.

Small useful extras. Unscrew the base cap for a storage compartment (blu-tack, pins, spare magnets). There's also an integrated brush-shaping plate: a smooth area to check paint consistency and grooves to pull a brush back to a point.

The Atlas is a grip-style painting handle: you hold the textured aluminium body, and your model sits on a magnetic dock on top. The included Cone Miniature Dock is a magnetic cone-shaped holder for small miniatures and loose parts. When you're not using it, it stores in the weighted base.

The platform is magnetic, so any compatible dock clicks on and off in seconds. That is the main difference from a one-piece handle: you can have several pieces on the go and swap between them without handling painted surfaces.

It suits brush painting of tabletop miniatures, display figures, busts on small plinths, and separate sub-assemblies (heads, arms, weapons, vehicle parts) painted before assembly.

✔ Good fit: infantry-scale miniatures (28–35 mm), character and display figures, small busts, and separate parts painted before assembly: heads, arms, weapons, backpacks, vehicle sub-assemblies.

✘ Not the right tool: large vehicles, big monsters on large bases, or whole terrain pieces. A handle this size isn't built to carry that weight at arm's length. For those, paint in hand or use a turntable.

✎ Brush painting first: the Atlas is designed for brush work at close range. You can airbrush a model held on it, but aluminium is easy to clean while plastic handles show overspray.

1. Fix loose parts to the cone dock with a small blob of mounting putty or a pin. A pin in a pre-drilled hole (where the part will be glued anyway) leaves no marks on painted surfaces.

2. Magnetise your bases and you'll use the platform even more. A steel washer or thin magnet glued under a base lets a based model sit directly on a magnetic surface. Test the hold with one model before you rely on it, especially for heavy metal or resin figures.

3. Use the ratchet instead of your fingers. Click the model round to the face you're painting and brace both wrists on the desk. Steady wrists matter more for fine lines than steady fingers.

4. Brush-shaping plate: be gentle with natural hair. Roll synthetic brushes through the grooves freely. For kolinsky sable, roll lightly with the paint, never scrub dry bristles through the grooves. A touch of brush soap and reshaping before storage does more for the point long-term.

5. Use the storage compartment for the things you always lose: a pin vice bit, spare pins, a few small magnets, a pea of blu-tack.

It's not a clamp handle. There are no spring jaws gripping the edge of a base. Models go on via the magnetic dock system, so you'll attach them with putty, a pin, or a magnet/steel washer under the base. If you want something that bites onto any base with no preparation, a clamp-style handle suits you better.

Solid aluminium has weight. That weight is what makes the base stable and the grip feel planted, but it is heavier in the hand than a wooden or plastic handle. If you paint for hours and prefer a featherweight grip, bear that in mind.

You're paying for the metal and the mechanism. Basic plastic painting handles cost a fraction of this and hold a miniature fine. The Atlas earns its price through the ratchet, swappable magnetic docks, weighted base and durability. If you don't need those, save your money.

One dock in the box. Working on several models or parts in rotation means preparing more mounting points.
