A very fine and unusual early 19th century silk sampler. We have four lines of alphabets in upper and lower case letters followed by another set in large letters either side of a central panel containing the sewers details ELIZABETH BISHOP BUTTERFIELD July 26th 1836, and Aged (removed) years. Followed by a series of Crowns for Prince, King, Queen & Earl..
The lower portion has three short verses followed across the bottom the saying Diligence, industry and proper improvement of time are material duties of the young !.

What appears to be its original frame measures 37 x 35.5 cm.14 x 14 1/2 inches, Wonderful old historic labels to back.
Condition a number of holes to ground fabric including some stitch loss. 

Research has shown Elizabeth was born in Bassingbourn, Cambridge, in July 1827. the daughter of Ann Bishop & Arthur Butterfield ( it is quite unusual for a girl to take her Mothers madden name like this at this time) Interestingly he was a shop keeper of Berlin Work. In 1851 Elizabeth is recorded as a Dressmaker.
