A lovely and very rare period model of the Shorts Belfast. A very rare model in need of cosmetic restoration.
The Short Belfast (designated the Belfast C.1 by the military) was a giant strategic transport plane built for the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Cold War.
- The Scale: It was the largest aircraft the British military had ever operated at the time of its entry into service. It possessed a wingspan of over 48 metres and could carry 150 fully equipped troops, a Chieftain tank, or helicopters.
- Innovation: It was the first aircraft in the world designed from the outset with a fully automatic blind-landing system.
- Rarity: Only 10 units were ever built. The RAF operated them from 1966 until budget cuts forced their retirement in 1976.
- Civilian Second Life: Five were later sold to HeavyLift Cargo Airlines, serving as commercial heavy-lifters that were even chartered back by the military during the Falklands and Gulf Wars.
- Where Are They Now?: One is proudly preserved on public display at the RAF Museum Midlands (Cosford). Another has been undergoing long-term restoration in Australia
