Description
The Nikon NIKKOR-Q Auto 200mm f/4 (Late Version) marks the transition toward
Nikon’s modern lens design language, both mechanically and ergonomically.
Introduced around 1969, this version adopts the all-black barrel
construction, replacing the earlier chrome finish and aligning with the
design direction that would continue into later pre-AI and AI lenses.
While retaining the same 4 elements in 4 groups optical formula, this
version introduces practical refinements. The minimum focusing distance is
reduced to 2 meters, improving usability, and the aperture system is updated
to a 7-lamella diaphragm with an extended range to f/32, providing greater
control over exposure and depth of field.
Externally, it features a scalloped aperture ring and a more refined
handling design, along with a narrower built-in hood profile. These changes
reflect Nikon’s effort to standardize operation and improve handling
consistency across the growing F-mount system.
Still part of the single-coated generation, this version represents a more
mature stage of the design—bridging early automatic telephoto lenses and the
later multicoated “C” versions that followed.
Enjoy the history!!
