An exceptional, highly collectible matching pair of authentic World War I British Trench Art brass jugs/pitchers. Hand-crafted in 1917, these stunning historical pieces were masterfully repurposed from genuine 6-Pounder (6 PR III) artillery shell casings.
Each pitcher features intricate, hand-stippled and chased artwork depicting stylized leaves, organic flowing lines, and heavily textured backgrounds. Because they are hand-worked, the designs are unique yet beautifully unified—making them a true, complementary pair. Both shells have been expertly shaped at the rim to form a clean pouring spout and are fitted with robust, securely riveted brass handles. The brass retains a magnificent, warm patina with subtle iridescent tones.
The bases of both shells are heavily stamped with official military proofs, providing excellent historical provenance:
Caliber: 6 PR III (British 6-Pounder, Mark III)Date Stamp: 1917 (Both pieces)Lot Numbers: Lot 915 & Lot 103Inspection Marks: British Broad Arrow / Canadian Broad Arrow "C" stamps, "CF" (Cordite Charge Filling mark), and maker/factory code "K".
Beautiful antique condition. They display minor surface marks, faint scratches, and blemishes that validate their age and authenticity. The interiors show expected darkening and historical oxidation from the shell's original active life. They sit sturdy and flat.
