Up for sale is vintage 1958 original mixed media on paper painting by Canadian artist Gérard Tremblay (1928-1992). This deeply expressive work is very well executed with high level of artistic skills. 

The painting in-sight is measuring about 19 ½” (49 cm) by 12” (30.5 cm), and the frame is measuring 26 ½” (67 cm) by 18 ½” (47 cm).

It is signed and dated by the artist in the upper right corner

                                 Gérard Tremblay (1928-1992)

Gérard Tremblay (1928–1992) was a Quebec painter and engraver born in Les Éboulements, Charlevoix. A graduate of the École des beaux-arts de Montréal (1947), he studied engraving at the Institut des arts graphiques under Albert Dumouchel and Arthur Gladu. He held his first solo exhibition in 1947 and received first prize at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Spring Exhibition in 1951, followed by a Canada Council grant in 1967.

From 1968 to 1982, Tremblay taught engraving, lithography, and art education at Université Laval. He also served as president of the Association des graveurs du Québec and played an important role in the development of printmaking in Quebec.

Working in oil, ink, watercolor, pastel, and printmaking, Tremblay developed a distinctive surrealist style characterized by dreamlike imagery, lyricism, and humor. He was also an accomplished illustrator of literary books, notably collaborating with poets Roland Giguère, Claude Haeffely, and Robert Marteau. His works are held in major Canadian collections, including the MNBAQ, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and Vancouver Art Gallery. Retrospectives of his work were held in Montreal in 2004 and at the Musée des beaux-arts de Mont-Saint-Hilaire in 2006.

Tremblay died in Montreal in 1992. He was married to Mercédès Renaud and had three children, Christian, Sylvain, and Catherine.
