The item itself:
Sir Henry Irving has boldly signed this clipping in black ink, dated 1892. Liberated from a Victorian-era album.
Approximate size of clipping: c. 3.5" x 1.5” (or approx. 9 cm x 3 cm)
Sir Henry Irving:
Irving was a leading actor of the Victorian era, hugely popular in his performances in Shakespearean plays, as well as other high-profile theatre roles. He is referred to as an actor-manager, because he took complete responsibility for season after season of the productions he was involved in (supervising sets, lighting, direction, casting, and also playing leading roles). He took his profession seriously. After performing in a 1871 performance of 'The Bells', his heavily pregnant wife questioned whether he was going to go on "making of fool of yourself like this all your life?", hurt by the insult to his profession, Irving departed their carriage in the dark of night, and never saw her again.
After he took over the management of the Lyceum Theatre, Irving brought leading lady Dame Ellen Terry into partnership with him, forming a hugely-successful partnership with her - it has been speculated by many that this professional relationship extended to one of a romantic nature. Together, they were at the forefront of the British theatre scene.
From 1878, the great Irish author Bram Stoker worked for Irving as a Business Manager. Irving became a great influence on Stoker's professional life, so-much-so that Irving became central to his hugely famous Gothic horror novel, 'Dracula' - with the central role of 'Count Dracula' being based on Irving.
Irving was offered a Knighthood in 1883, and again in 1895 (which he accepted). He is buried at Westminster Abbey - an honour bestowed on very ffew.
His cousin was the celebrated poet W.H. Davies, and both Irving's sons followed him into acting.
