A fabulous 1960s–70s Brutalist Studio Craft belt and buckle, featuring a dramatic sculptural mixed-metal buckle with a natural turquoise centerpiece.
The oversized buckle combines a warm copper central disk with brass-toned radiating forms, creating an almost primitive sun or celestial motif. An irregular polished turquoise stone with natural matrix is set dramatically within the open center. The intentionally organic edges, irregular surfaces, visible construction and beautifully developed patina give the buckle the character of small-scale wearable sculpture.
The buckle is unsigned, and the artist is unknown. Stylistically, the piece belongs to the same period of American Studio Craft jewelry associated with artists such as Jack Boyd, whose work explored sculptural metalwork and natural stones. No attribution to Boyd is being made.
The buckle measures approximately 2½ inches across and is mounted on a handsome dark brown genuine alligator belt approximately 1 inch wide. The belt is stamped Genuine Alligator, marked size 34, and bears an additional partially legible gold maker/retailer mark. Measuring from the buckle to the last hole, it is approximately 36 inches.
The buckle has an excellent naturally aged surface with warm patination and areas of oxidation consistent with the mixed metals. The alligator belt shows considerable vintage wear, including surface crazing, rubbing and finish wear; please examine the detailed photographs carefully. Despite the wear, the aged alligator complements the sculptural buckle beautifully and gives the piece a wonderful period appearance.
An unusual and highly decorative piece of Brutalist wearable art, combining mixed metals, turquoise and genuine alligator in a bold 1960s–70s design.
