Up for auction is an original antique Ouija Board with a patented date of February 10, 1891... during the 19th-century spiritualism craze. This authentic 19th century "talking/seance board" measures approximately 23" x 15.5" (a larger board). The board was acquired with no planchette which is pretty common. I've had this board in my collection for years and hesitate to part with it as I see these pieces as works of art. Personally, I would find a 19th C. frame and hang it up. I'll provide additional info about this board to whomever purchases it, that I received from the person I acquired it from.
The Ouija board was invented in Baltimore, MD... some say by Charles Kennard. In 1891 Kennard pulled together a group of four other investors (William Fuld, A. Commodore and Elijah Bond... a local attorney) to start the Kennard Novelty Company. Ouija is now synonymous for all spirit boards. The name was coined by Helen Peters, a medium, who was testing out the board with her Brother-In-Law (Elijah Bond) one night. When asked what they should call the board the planchette spelled out "Ouija". When asked what that meant, the board responded with "Good Luck"... as the story goes.
