This is a beautiful, sweeping original panoramic watercolour painting by the listed British landscape and portrait artist Caroline Leeds (Caroline Fleur Osborne, Duchess of Leeds / Lady Hobart, 1931–2005).
About the Artist: Caroline Leeds (Lady Hobart)
The signature "Leeds" on the front of the painting and the name "Lady Hobart" on the gallery label actually refer to the same high-society British artist: Caroline Fleur Osborne, Duchess of Leeds (later Lady Hobart, 1931–2005).
The Names Explained: Professionally, she painted under the name Caroline Leeds (from her marriage to John Osborne, the 11th Duke of Leeds). Later in life, she married Lt. Commander Sir Robert Hobart, acquiring the title Lady Hobart, which explains why the gallery labelled her work under her personal title.
Her Career: She was a highly accomplished British portraitist and landscape painter who studied under esteemed artists like Philip Lambe and Bernard Adams. Because of her travels worldwide, she captured beautiful, atmospheric location scenes.
The Gallery: Her work was sold through the prestigious Gagliardi Gallery located on King's Road in Chelsea, London. This piece was originally purchased there in September 1999 for £295.
This piece features a scenic continental European village with prominent church spires, viewed from a hillside meadow filled with wild grass and red poppies. It showcases the artist's signature delicate touch and atmospheric style. It is signed "Leeds" in the lower right corner of the painting
Provenance & Presentation:
This piece comes from the same private estate collection as a companion Prague painting by the same artist (which featured a Gagliardi Gallery label dated September 1999). While the back of this frame does not retain its label, it features matching framing styling from the same period. It is presented in a classic gold-toned wooden frame with an elegant lined off-white mount.
