CARL RODECK (1841–1909) – ANTIQUE WINTER LANDSCAPE – OIL ON CANVAS – SIGNED
Offered for sale is an attractive antique winter landscape painting depicting a quiet snow-covered countryside with mature trees and a rustic structure nestled within the landscape.
The painting is signed “Carl Rodeck” and is being offered as a work by Carl Rodeck (1841–1909), the German landscape, marine and genre painter associated with Hamburg.
Rodeck studied at the Weimar Art School under artists including Arnold Böcklin, Ferdinand Pauwels and Alexander Michelis, later working in Berlin before establishing himself in Hamburg. His landscapes are represented in institutional collections including the Hamburg Kunsthalle and Glasgow Museums. Documented auction examples include signed oil-on-canvas landscapes by Rodeck in a variety of sizes.
This painting is particularly interesting because the reverse retains several markings, including “No. 157” appearing in more than one location, as well as measurements/notations on the wooden stretcher. These markings have been preserved and are shown in the photographs. They may relate to a canvas, stretcher, workshop, dealer or collection numbering system; their precise significance has not been established.
The painting is being offered in antique/pre-owned condition consistent with age.
Please expect age-related characteristics such as craquelure, surface wear, minor abrasions, discoloration and/or previous restoration or retouching. The frame may also show age-related wear.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as the photographs form an important part of the condition description.
The reverse markings have been left intact and have not been cleaned, erased or altered.
The signature clearly reads “Carl Rodeck.” The attribution is supported by comparison with documented Carl Rodeck works bearing both “Carl Rodeck” and “C. Rodeck” signatures.
However, BeauxArtsGallery has not had this particular painting independently authenticated by a museum, recognized authentication committee or specialist. Accordingly, the painting is offered based upon the visible signature, style, construction and available research, with all photographs provided for the buyer's examination.
Carl Rodeck works continue to appear in European and American auction markets. Documented examples include signed oil-on-canvas landscapes, with auction estimates and realized prices varying considerably according to subject, size, condition and provenance.
This is an opportunity to acquire a signed antique German landscape by a documented 19th-century painter whose works remain represented in the auction market.
