Antique Victorian Cased Dessert Cutlery Set Silver Plated Bone Handles 12 Piece
Here I have for sale a beautiful, highly decorative antique Victorian 12-piece cased dessert cutlery set, featuring finely engraved silver-plated blades and classic spiral-fluted handles, presented in its original fitted wooden box.
This elegant late-19th-century dessert service includes 6 matching fruit/dessert knives and 6 matching dessert forks. The silver-plated knife blades feature a stunning, highly detailed Victorian bright-cut engraved pattern of stylized fern fronds, scalloped borders, and delicate floral starburst geometric decorations. The forks are beautifully detailed with matching foliate bright-cut engraving on the tines.
The pieces are fitted with striking ivory-colored bone handles intricately carved with a traditional deep spiral twist/fluted design, terminating in polished silver-plated collars. The set is housed inside its original, premium fitted wooden presentation case, lined with a vibrant royal blue interior base. It makes a magnificent, highly authentic antique dining display piece or styling prop.

Condition
Overall Condition: Good antique display condition, showing honest signs of age and wear consistent with late Victorian tableware.
Metalwork & Engraving: The silver plating is bright with a beautiful reflective polish. The ornate hand-engraved bright-cut patterns remain incredibly crisp and deep on both the blades and fork bases.
Handles & Structure: The carved bone handles have aged to a lovely, authentic mellow cream patina. As is very common with antique natural bone cutlery, several of the handles exhibit fine surface age lines and structural hairline cracks near the friction joints. While the pieces are structurally intact, they are best suited as an antique decorative display set rather than for heavy daily functional use.
Set Variances: Please note that one fork from the set features a smooth, un-engraved base design compared to the other 5 patterned forks, indicating an early historical period replacement.
Presentation Case: The wooden box is in sturdy condition with its original brass hinges and blank brass top shield. The vibrant blue velvet lining remains beautifully bright and plushly padded.
During the high Victorian era, the formal dinner parties of the wealthy British middle class required highly specialized, separate cutlery courses for fish, fruit, and desserts. Silver-plated fruit and dessert services with ornately carved bone or ivorine handles became the ultimate status symbol of etiquette. The Gothic makers stamp "H J & S" corresponds to a prominent Sheffield or Birmingham silver-plating manufacturing firm operating during the late 19th century, utilizing high-grade electroplated nickel silver (EPNS) to replicate the luxurious appearance of solid sterling silver for elite estates.
