BIOGRAPHY OF MAJ. Z. K. PANGBORN

Major Pangborn was a Civil War officer, newspaper editor, and politician. Born in Peacham Vermont, July 31, 1829 and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1850, taught school for four years including serving as principal of the academy at Johnson, VT, having Admiral George Dewey as one of his pupils.

In 1854, Zebina Pangborn became the editor of his first newspaper; the Teacher's Voice and the Vermont Weekly Tribune at St Albans, Vt. Pangborn was also involved with the Daily Transcript (Worchester, MA), Boston Daily Atlas and Bee newspapers during these years. In 1856, he was a delegate to the Republican Convention that nominated John C Fremont for President.

Panborn was appointed a paymaster with the rank of major in the US Army Volunteers (Sept 5, 1861) and was attached to General Thomas West Sherman's (# 21425884) Division Staff, Department of the South during the Hilton Head SC expedition in 1861. He served until March 11, 1862, until the US Senate rejected his commission, having found discrepancies in his book keeping while paymaster and he was discharged of his duties. Zebina retired from his short military career but continued to use the title "Major", for the rest of his life.

In 1865 Pangborn moved to Jersey City, NJ and later established The Evening Journal, today's Jersey Journal and was its editor until 1895. Zebina always active with Jersey City Republican politics, was a strong advocate of women sufferage. He was nominated in 1898 for Congress from Hudson County but defeated by his Democratic opponent William D Daly (#7743175) in the general election.

Pangborn died Nov 11, 1902 at the age of 73. in Hillburn, NY at the home of his sister Mrs Lucy M Hoar. He is buried in New York Bayview Cemetery, Jersey City.
