These are DEMONETIZED coins.  That means that the only places in the UK which will accept them are certain banks.  They were replaced by the current bimetallic Pound coin in 2017, and are no longer legal tender - they are for deposit only, regardless of condition. If the bank will not accept them, you have NO other place to attempt to use or deposit them. 


These are SCRAP coins. We have other auctions for other SCRAP coins while supplies last.These are likely not spendable in their present condition; they must be deposited at banks IF THEY WILL ACCEPT THEM IN THIS CONDITION.  Please check with your bank before purchase!  We're on the wrong side of the pond to guide you properly on the details. :)


These coins are counted by scale weight only.  You may receive slightly more face value than advertised because they are going to be slightly lighter on average than the coins we normally ship. Being a recycler, we do have 'normal' channels to bulk scrap buyers - our floor price on these auctions is based on what we know we can get for these in bulk + what we know our shipping costs for them are.


What makes these coins "scrap?"  


When readying our traditional "worn" coins for sale, which we sell thousands of each month, I sort them by hand in stacks looking at them edge-on to eliminate the largest percentage of coins that I know or suspect will be unusable. I'm looking for coins that are:


-Bent by machinery (this is by far the most common defect)

-Have edge dings from machinery

-Have edge compression from a side impact (coin looks like a "D" when facing you)

-Have been caught in the machinery and been elongated or torn (these often have their inscriptions also worn off)

-Thinned by wear enough to be very noticeable in the stack compared to others

-Have porosity visible from the edge from incinerator heat causing internal ejection


EVERY COIN IN THIS SCRAP LISTING HAS ONE OR MORE OF THE ABOVE DEFECTS.


If I want to try to repair them myself, what are my options?


The only possible repairable condition from the above list is the coins that are bent - these are also the most common type of damage.  I can tell you that simply hitting them with a hammer will not fix them - that will make them larger in diameter which will make them not be accepted by any bank.  Diameter and weight are very important in separating real coins from counterfeits - you cannot change either of these and expect someone to accept them.

It is possible that these could be straightened with carefully applied pressure from a hydraulic shop press.  If that's possible, you will definitely be spending your time doing it, and for goodness' sake, watch your fingers!  LOL. To be clear, I'm not advertising these coins as repairable!  If you are not a risk taker, do not bid on these coins!  You will not get as much as you spent if you sell them to a scrapyard.

Pictures are representative of the type and grade of coins you will receive, but are not the exact coins you'll receive.  


Our parent company is a recycling business and our coins come from many sources - "wishing well" fountains, incinerators, other recyclers, etc... On their trip to you, all of these coins passed through heavy sorting machinery which handles thousands of pounds of coins and coin-sized debris daily.  These machines aren't gentle - it's very rare to find a coin which is still shiny at the end of this process.  


These have all been circulated and will be dirty.  Their surfaces will generally look rougher than coins which have only spent time in purses or pockets - they've been through a lot!  These will all be no longer shiny; they have a dull finish due to wear.  All will be heavily worn and / or discolored.  All of the above is before each of these coins was somehow damaged by the recycling machinery or incinerator in such a way that I pulled it out because it was too bad to ship as a spendable coin.


We guarantee that these will not go through an automatic coin counter.
