20TH  CENTURY  SURREAL:IST  FRENCH  PAINTING

” GLOVE & APPLE "
 
The painter, identified only by the monogram ED at lower right, works in the Northern European Magic Realist manner — the airless, meticulous idiom of Willink and Koch, in which ordinary things are described with hallucinatory exactness and arranged to make no ordinary sense.

A shallow slatted pine crate stands upright on a block of rough white stone, set on a table draped in olive-green damask patterned with ferns and blossom. Inside the crate a long white glove hangs from a wooden clothes peg tied with wire, its fingers falling limply through the slats. One yellow apple sits on the crate floor at lower right.

The handling is smooth and invisible, lit softly from the left against a flat grey-brown ground. Pine grain, pitted stone, silk sheen and the glove's slight translucency all receive equal attention.

Returns

Frames

Any frames photographed are provided with paintings free of charge and we make no warranty on their condition. Glass is not shipped with paintings due to risk of damage.

Certificate of Authenticity

A Certificate of Authenticity is available at a charge of £20 GBP per painting. Please request this directly with us & allow 3 days for origination.
