19th CENTURY FRENCH BRITTANY OIL PAINTING ON CANVAS
“ HARBOUR BY MOONLIGHT "
A small harbour at low tide, held in the blue-grey light that hangs over the Breton coast after dusk. Two fishing boats sit close to the viewer, one heeled slightly into the mud with its dark green hull catching almost no light, the other showing a pale white strake that carries the eye across the composition. Behind them, masts rise as thin vertical accents against a low line of whitewashed houses and a distant band of trees, all dissolved into atmosphere rather than drawn.
The painter's real subject is the water itself. Broad, loaded strokes of grey, ochre and pearl describe the flats, broken by scattered pools that hold reflected light like coins. A few touches of warm yellow — a lamp, a lit window — punctuate the cool palette and fix the hour.
The handling is broad and confident, closer to the Grez-sur-Loing and Concarneau painters of the 1880s and 1890s than to strict Impressionism: tonal, restrained, more concerned with mood than with colour theory. The signature is worn and has not been securely read, and the work is presently catalogued as by an unidentified hand.
