The shank carries a single stamp: ATLAS, MADE IN DENMARK. That is the whole of what this pipe volunteers about its own maker, and we print nothing more about the firm than what is stamped there.

This is a smooth-finished straight apple, fitted with a vulcanite stem that tapers to a fishtail slot and bored for a 9mm filter. It has been smoked and is offered here as an estate pipe.

The apple shape sits among the classic rounded bowl forms: fuller through the shoulder than a billiard, with the bowl reading as one continuous curve from rim to heel rather than straight sides meeting a flat base. A straight shank keeps the stem in line with the bowl's axis, so the weight of the pipe sits directly under the hand rather than off to one side - a stance suited to a pipe meant to be held and turned in the fingers rather than clenched in the teeth for long stretches. The tapered vulcanite stem narrows steadily from the shank join down to the bit, ending in a fishtail slot: a bit opening cut into two flat lobes rather than a single round bore, which spreads the smoke stream across the tongue and is generally regarded as a cooler, gentler draw than a pinched single-slot bit.

The 9mm designation refers to the bore cut through shank and stem to accept a charcoal or paper filter cartridge of that diameter. Such a filter sits in the airway between chamber and bit; its main job is moisture control, intercepting condensation before it reaches the tongue, at some cost to how freely the pipe draws compared with an open, unrestricted airway. The bore is sized specifically for the 9mm standard and will not take the narrower 6mm cartridge without an adapter.

A smooth finish is produced by taking the briar down through successive grits to a polish, leaving whatever grain the block carries - flame, birdseye, straight run - visible under the stain rather than hidden in texture the way a sandblast or rustication would show it in relief instead. Vulcanite, the stem material here, is rubber hardened with sulfur; it takes a high polish easily when new but is known to shift toward a brownish or greenish cast over years of exposure to light, a change that affects the stem far more visibly than it does the wood.
