A circa-1925 souvenir postcard booklet titled “Nordlige Norge” (“Northern Norway”), published by Mittet & Co. Kunstforlag of Oslo.

The booklet contains 19 of its original 20 detachable black-and-white photographic postcards, presenting an evocative tour of northern Norway during the early 20th century. The cards feature dramatic mountains, coastal communities, fjords, harbors and scenes of traditional life in the far north.

Some of the identified views are:

• De Syv Søstre — the celebrated Seven Sisters mountain range on the Helgeland coast

• Træna — the remote island community surrounded by striking mountain formations

• Hestmandø — the island associated with the distinctive Hestmannen mountain

• Bodø — an early waterfront view of the northern port city

• Kirkenes — showing the harbor and industrial landscape near Norway’s northeastern frontier

• A historical Sámi family scene with reindeer and a traditional turf-covered dwelling, captioned “Lapper,” the period terminology printed on the card

Mittet & Co. was founded in 1899 by Norwegian photographer and publisher Ingebrigt Mittet. The company became one of Norway’s most prolific publishers of photographic postcards, employing photographers and documenting cities, villages, landscapes and everyday life throughout the country. Large portions of the firm’s historic photographic archive are now preserved in Norwegian museum and national heritage collections.

Each postcard measures approximately 6 x 4 inches. The cards have divided backs and are unused and unwritten upon. They remain together in their original dark paper-covered booklet with gold lettering and decoration.

Condition:

Nineteen of the original twenty postcards are present; one card is missing. The booklet and cards show age-related wear, including edge wear, slightly bent or softened corners, occasional surface marks and wear around the perforated binding edges. The covers show rubbing, scuffing and wear along the edges and spine. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
