Vintage 1970s handwoven wicker monkey sculpture in the distinctive style of Mexican artist and designer Mario Lopez Torres. The monkey is constructed entirely from tightly woven natural wicker, with long arms, round ears, and black eyes. The expressive figure has a wonderfully graphic, sculptural quality and closely resembles the whimsical woven animal forms associated with Torres.
The monkey does not stand independently and is intended to be displayed leaning or supported against another object. Natural variation in the wicker and minor irregularities throughout are part of the handmade construction, including loose arms/joints, small gaps/holes, etc. Natural variation in the wicker, loose ends, and minor irregularities throughout are consistent with its handmade construction and age.
