A genuinely special early Coleman lantern for the serious collector.

This is a 1935 Coleman Model 242A, an early single-mantle gasoline lantern featuring the highly desirable nickel-plated brass fount. The fount is non-magnetic and shows brass at the filler-neck threads beneath the nickel plating. This is not simply a painted or steel fount — the fuel reservoir is brass with nickel plating over it, an important feature for collectors of early Coleman lanterns.

The lantern also retains its original-style sparker/lighting system, adding to its appeal and historical character.

Highlights

The 242A belongs to the early generation of Coleman single-mantle pressure lanterns. Examples from this period are considerably less common than the later Coleman lanterns that collectors encounter regularly.

The nickel-plated brass fount is a particularly desirable feature. The nickel finish gives the lantern its silver appearance, while the underlying fount is brass. Please examine the photographs closely for the condition of the original finish, including any age-related wear, discoloration, scratches, small dents, or areas of plating loss.

Condition

This is an approximately 90-year-old vintage lantern. It has been used and shows appropriate signs of age and use.

The lantern has been tested and is working, but it is being sold as a vintage collectible rather than as a newly manufactured appliance. Buyers should review all photographs carefully and make their own determination regarding cosmetic condition and suitability for continued operation.

The original vintage finish has been preserved rather than aggressively stripped or refinished.

Please look carefully at all photographs — the pictures are considered part of the description.

Collector's Note

The combination of the 1935 production date, Model 242A, early single-mantle design, original sparker, and nickel-plated brass fount makes this an especially interesting example for a Coleman collector.

A beautiful piece of early Coleman history and an excellent addition to a serious lantern collection.
