Dungeons & Dragons Limited-Edition Chess Set – Wizards of the Coast – 2006

Not merely chess with dragons glued onto it. This substantial licensed Dungeons & Dragons set turns the traditional chess armies into opposing forces drawn from D&D's metallic and chromatic dragons.

The light army includes Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon as King, with Gold Dragon Queens, Copper Dragon Bishops, Bronze Dragon Knights, Silver Dragon Rooks and Brass Dragon Pawns.

Facing them are the chromatic forces, led by a Red Dragon King with Tiamat, the Chromatic Dragon as Queen, supported by Green Dragon Bishops, Blue Dragon Knights, Black Dragon Rooks and White Dragon Pawns.

The sculpted pieces have an appropriately weighty, display-quality appearance with contrasting antique metallic finishes. They store individually in the fitted protective tray beneath the wooden chessboard.

Also included are the original instructions for the optional “Dragon Rage” D&D chess variant, which adds draconic abilities including Dragon Flight, Dragon Breath and Dragon Rage to ordinary chess play.

This is the full presentation rather than a loose collection of replacement pieces, making it particularly appealing to D&D collectors as well as fantasy chess collectors.

CONDITION: Pre-owned and well preserved overall. Chess pieces display nicely with light evidence of handling/storage. Board and fitted interior remain attractive. Original outer box shows considerably more wear from age and storage, including scuffs, scratches and edge/corner wear. Please use the photographs as the final condition reference.

A wonderfully excessive artifact from the era when Wizards of the Coast apparently asked, “Could chess use more dragons?” and correctly concluded that the answer was thirty-two of them.
