A particularly lovely small hand-carved wooden lidded pot, decorated with a detailed elephant design around the body and further carved decoration to the removable lid.
One of the most striking things about this piece is how substantial and heavy it feels for its small size. It is made from a beautiful, dense dark hardwood with a rich reddish-brown colour and attractive natural grain. It has a quality, solid feel in the hand that is difficult to convey in photographs.
The body has been turned and then intricately carved, with lovely detail to the elephants, including their trunks, ears and textured features. The removable lid is also carved and finished with a small turned wooden finial.
The underside retains visible circular turning marks and the centre point from its manufacture.
I believe this is likely a South Asian decorative piece, possibly Indian, although there are no maker's marks or labels, so I cannot confirm its exact origin, age or species of wood.
Size: Approximately 8 cm (3.1 inches) across at the widest point. Please see the photograph alongside a ruler for scale.
Condition: Good pre-owned condition with some minor marks and wear. Please study all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
A really attractive, tactile piece of carved woodwork. Despite being only palm-sized, its weight, dense timber and depth of carving give it a surprisingly substantial feel.
Ideal as a trinket pot, small jewellery box or decorative display piece.
Pot and removable lid included.
