Vintage ceramic elephant planter or vase, likely 1950s. The elephant is modelled mid stride with its trunk raised, with airbrushed blue-grey shading and hand painted details to the eyes, ears, tusks and toes. The pink blushed ears are a nice touch. The planter opening sits in the elephant's back.
The piece is unmarked, but the style of moulding and hand painted decoration is consistent with Japanese-made ceramic giftware of the 1950s. Elephants with raised trunks were a popular giftware subject, traditionally said to signify good fortune.
Approx. 13 cm high x 19 cm wide x 9 cm deep.
Condition: No chips or cracks. Some age related crazing to the glaze. The small hole in the underside is a firing vent from manufacture, not damage. Please see the photos for more detail.
Please note - I have a three business day turnaround between payment and postage in my T&Cs. I'd like to be faster, but I have little kids who sometimes don't allow it! Please contact me if you need it sent sooner though, and I'll try my best!
Please check my other listings for more collectables. Always happy to combine postage!
