A Jizo Bodhisattva statue (known affectionately as "O-Jizo-sama") represents a compassionate Buddha—and the physical image thereof—who vowed to save suffering beings by traversing the Six Realms (including Hell and the human world) during the "era without a Buddha"—the period between the passing of Shakyamuni and the future arrival of Maitreya Bodhisattva.
