Vintage Mexican Aztec vs Spanish Conquistador Chess Set

Large and highly decorative Mexican chess set, believed to date from around the 1970s, depicting the Aztec/Mexica world opposing the Spanish Conquistadors.

The substantial sculptural pieces are produced in a stone/resin composite, finished in contrasting green and cream with hand-applied gold-coloured details. Similar Mexican sets were produced using resin combined with crushed mineral/stone to create their distinctive stone-like appearance.

This is one of the larger versions, with the tallest figures measuring approximately 14–15cm high.

The board has individually decorated green and cream squares incorporating Mesoamerican-inspired motifs and is mounted within a substantial wooden case. The case opens to provide fitted storage for the chess pieces when not in use.

A particularly striking decorative set when assembled.

Condition: This is a vintage, used set and there is wear throughout consistent with age. Some pieces show damage and/or previous repairs — please study the photographs carefully as these form an important part of the condition description.
