A la corbeille des fleurs - At (the sign of) the basket of flowers. This was the French perfumer, Houbigant's trademark symbol since the business was established in Paris in 1775. The case on offer pays homage to this original symbol and is the prominent decoration on this case that was released in America in March 1934. The classic design of the basket of flowers is in stark contrast to the very modern (for the time) design of the case itself. The design was patented by an employee of the August Goertz's case making business based in New Jersey. The design was used for no other perfumer or cosmetics business and so it remains a lasting example of both Houbigant and August Goertz. In advertising of the time the case was described as "...a new double compact in a scratch-proof chromium finished case with a pearl grey top embellished in colour with the Houbigant 'flower basket'. The case is light in weight and convenient and contains the company's famous 'dull finish' face powder." The case is 5cm in diameter and 2cm high. It weighs 50gm.
