⚠️ Two things to be clear about before you order

This is three plates, not four. Several UK listings for this product have "4pcs" in the title and "3pcs" in the description. DSPIAE supply three. You are buying 3 × 75 × 25 × 2 mm plates.

Sandpaper is not included. These are carriers — you supply the abrasive. The good news is covered below: unlike every other sanding carrier DSPIAE make, this one needs no cutting at all.

📌 The problem this solves

Sanding flat by hand does not produce flat. Hold a piece of paper in your fingers and every bit of pressure goes through three fingertips, which means the middle gets sanded more than the ends and the edges of the part get rounded off. You look at the panel afterwards, it feels smooth, and then you prime it — and there is a shallow dish where the seam was and a soft radius where a crisp edge used to be.

The fix is a rigid backing plate, which most people know. The reason they still do not use one is the second problem: changing grit is a nuisance. You have one board, so going from #400 to #800 means peeling paper off, finding the next grit, sticking it down and lining it up. Do that four times in a session and you stop doing it. You carry on with a worn #400 because it is easier than stopping, and the finish suffers for it.

Neither of those is a skill problem. Both are a kit problem.

🔧 Six grits, loaded, no blade required

▪ The plate is 75 × 25 mm. The paper is 75 × 25 mm. Not "roughly" — the same two numbers. DSPIAE make their entire self-adhesive range, MSP and SP alike, in one size, and it is this size. Peel the backing, lay it on, press down. No ruler, no blade, no cutting mat, nothing to trim in either direction. This is the only carrier in the DSPIAE range that can say that.

▪ Three plates, two faces each — six sanding surfaces. The plates are 2 mm thick and both sides work. Load them once with something like #400, #600, #800, #1000, #1500 and #2000 and your entire grit ladder lives on the bench permanently. Changing grit becomes picking up a different plate. That is the whole point, and it is why three plates is a genuinely different tool from one board.

▪ Forged aluminium alloy, rigid where it matters. Pressure spreads evenly across the full 75 × 25 mm face instead of concentrating under your fingertips, so a flat surface stays flat and an edge stays an edge. The metal makes the part match the plate rather than the other way round.

▪ Oxidised and sandblasted finish. Matt and slightly textured rather than slick, so the plate does not slide around in your fingers while you are concentrating on the part.

▪ 2 mm total thickness. Thin enough to get behind and underneath things that a chunky handled block simply cannot approach, while still being stiff across a 25 mm width.

▪ The adhesive releases cleanly. DSPIAE's paper is designed to peel off these plates without leaving residue, so a plate can be re-papered many times over. The plates are the tool. The paper is the consumable.

Straight answer: order paper at the same time or these will sit in a drawer. If you already know which grits you use, MSP singles let you buy exactly those, #180 through #2500. If you are setting up from scratch, SP-S01 covers the coarse end (#180–#800) and SP-S02 the fine end (#1000–#2500), both in multi-grit sets with a storage box. Any 3M-backed self-adhesive paper cut to 75 × 25 mm will work — the DSPIAE sizing just saves you doing the cutting.

🤔 Which one do you actually need?

DSPIAE make a lot of things you can stick sandpaper to. The differences are real and they are mostly about width, mass and shape — the colour is purely which one you prefer to look at:

AS-RD25 — this set	3 × 25 mm plates. Six grit faces, zero cutting. The everyday default.
AS-RD15	2 × 10 mm + 2 × 5 mm plates, same red finish. For when 25 mm is too wide and bridges over raised detail. Paper needs cutting to width.
AS-25 PRO board	Handled board, 25 × 75 mm face, 90 mm handle, smooth side and sawtooth side. More comfortable, cuts faster — but one face, one grit at a time.
AS-25FP / PP / CP blocks	Solid profile blocks — flat, 90° internal angle, curved. Mass and fixed geometry rather than a grit ladder.

Straight answer: if you are buying one DSPIAE sanding carrier, buy this one. It handles the majority of ordinary flat work, it needs no paper preparation whatsoever, and six loaded faces will change how you sand more than any single fancier tool will. Come back for the AS-RD15 narrow plates once you have hit the specific wall of the plate being wider than the part — and if what you actually do is long sessions on large surfaces, the handled AS-25 PRO board will be kinder to your fingers, even though it only carries one grit at a time.

💡 Getting the best out of them

Set the ladder up once and leave it. Six faces, six grits, in order. The entire benefit of this set evaporates if you treat it as three spare boards and keep re-papering one of them.

Mark the grit on the 2 mm edge. A paint pen dot or a sliver of tape. Three identical plates with six identical-looking faces will otherwise cost you more time than the grit change ever did.

Spread your fingers along the length. Two or three fingers distributed over the 75 mm, not one in the middle. The plate only keeps things flat if you let it — press in one spot and you have reinvented the problem you bought it to solve.

Press the paper down properly. Run a thumbnail or the edge of another plate across the whole face after sticking. An air bubble under the paper is a soft spot, and a soft spot is a dish in the part.

If you wet sand, dry the plates afterwards. DSPIAE's paper is rated for wet or dry use. The manufacturer makes no wet-use claim for the plates themselves, so treat them like any other bare metal tool — wipe them dry rather than leaving them damp on the bench.

Keep one face coarse and permanently scruffy. A #180 or #240 face is what you reach for on sprue stubs and cured putty. Ruining a fine grit on that kind of work is the most common way a ladder gets out of order.

⚖️ Honest limitations

No sandpaper is supplied. Three bare plates do nothing on their own. Budget for paper in the same order.

25 mm is sometimes too wide. On a narrow strip between raised details the plate will bridge across and sand the detail instead of the surface. That is not a defect, it is geometry — and it is exactly what the AS-RD15 set with its 5 mm and 10 mm plates exists to fix.

Flat work only. No curves, no internal 90° corners, no compound shapes. These are straight rigid plates doing one job.

No handle. You grip the plate. That is fine in bursts and tiring over a long session, and there is nothing ergonomic about a 2 mm edge after twenty minutes. The handled AS-25 PRO board exists for exactly that reason.
