A FIRE CHIEF REMEMBERS - TALES OF THE FDNY, Edwin F. Schneider, 1992.  Ed Schneider retired as a battalion chief - Battalion Commander of the FDNY 42nd Battalion in 1964.  His career spanned 33 years, mostly spent in Brooklyn units.  It was a colorful career and the culmination of a young fire buff who only dreamed of becoming a firefighter.  He tells of many of the firefighters he worked with including Thomas J. Lyons and Ed McCormack.  Some of his stories are quite funny, some dealing with "tyrants" that he worked under are not.  He tells of his rescue of an unconscious man that resulted in his being awarded the Brooklyn Citizens Medal in 1950.  A very readable book sure to bring back memories.  Note: Chief Schneider passed away in March, 1995.
