DSPIAE  |  ST-C2
Ultra-Thin Single-Edge Precision Nipper
The finishing cut, done properly, without the flagship price
⚠️ Three things DSPIAE says not to cut with this — and no other UK listing tells you
Not clear plastic. Clear runners are harder and more brittle than standard styrene, and DSPIAE state plainly that cutting them risks chipping the cutting edge. Canopies, visors, lenses, effect parts — use something else on those. This is the instruction most likely to save you the price of the tool in your first week.
Not resin. Same reason. Resin is harder and far less forgiving than injection-moulded plastic.
Not metal. Ever. No brass rod, no photo-etch fret, no wire, no staples. A finely ground edge will chip on the first cut and there is no coming back from it.
📌 The problem this solves

You take a part off the runner and there is a small white mark where the gate was. It does not sand out. It does not cut out. Prime over it and on a dark colour it still ghosts through.

That mark is the plastic itself, damaged. An ordinary nipper has two ground jaws that meet in the middle and squeeze the part from both sides on the way through — a pincer. Compress polymer hard enough and it whitens permanently. That is a stress mark, and no amount of finishing recovers it.

A single-edge nipper works the other way round: one fine cutting jaw, one flat supporting jaw, cutting into the plastic against a flat backing rather than crushing it between two wedges. Nothing pushes back from the far side, so there is nothing to whiten. The cut face comes off clean enough to prime straight over.

🔧 Two design details, and why they matter
▪ The micro-step. The two jaws are deliberately built not to meet perfectly flush — there is a tiny step between them. That sounds like a defect on a precision tool and it is the opposite. If the jaws met exactly, the last fraction of the cut would put the part under full compression, which is the moment plastic whitens. The step means the cutting jaw finishes its travel just clear of the flat one, so the cut ends in a shearing action instead of a squeeze. It is a small thing that does the actual work.
▪ The supporting jaw is deliberately wider. This is the fix for the thing that ruins cheap single-edge nippers: alignment. On this design everything depends on the cutting jaw landing in exactly the same place on the flat one, every time. Make the flat jaw a little wider and the cutting jaw seats naturally within it even with small tolerances in the pivot — so it stays aligned as the tool wears, rather than drifting off and starting to bruise the plastic again.
▪ 60CrV steel, high-frequency quenched. 60CrV is a chrome vanadium alloy used in the automotive industry, chosen here for lower wear and better impact resistance rather than for headline hardness. High-frequency quenching lets the hardening be applied where it is needed instead of through the whole tool — a hard working edge on a body that still has some toughness in it, which is what stops a fine edge behaving like glass.
▪ A stopper and adjusting screw on the side of the body. This limits how far the handles can spread and how hard the jaws can close. Over-travel and over-force are the two commonest ways a fine cutting edge gets damaged, and this is the part that stops both.
▪ 120 mm and 52 g. Small and light, held like a pen. On one cut that is meaningless; across a full sprue tree in an evening it is the difference between finishing and putting the kit down.

DSPIAE do not publish a Rockwell hardness figure or a cut-life test figure for the ST-C2, as they do for the ST-A 3.0. Rather than fill those rows with an estimate, we have left them out and said so.
🤔 ST-C2 or ST-A 3.0?
ST-C2This tool. Around £16. Micro-step, self-aligning jaw, side stopper, case and cap
ST-A 3.0Roughly twice the price. Published hardness and cut-life figures, rear limit regulator with its own adjusting wrench and setup procedure, leather holster and cloth
BothSame single-edge principle. Same materials limits. Same technique
Straight answer: the flagship does cut a little cleaner and we are not going to pretend otherwise — but for most people the difference is smaller than the price gap. If you have never used a single-edge nipper, start here. It does the finishing cut properly, which is the whole reason anyone wants a premium nipper in the first place, at under half the money. Move up to the ST-A 3.0 later if you build constantly and paint everything, by which point you will know exactly what you are paying for. Buying this first is not settling for less; it is finding out what you actually need before spending £38.
And the best value in the category, honestly: keep an ordinary cheap pair of snips on the bench for the first cut. Take the part off the runner two or three millimetres clear with the tool you do not mind wearing out, then come back with the ST-C2 and take the stub off flush. Better result, and the good tool spends its life on thin easy cuts instead of thick gates. At this price you can afford both, which is more than can be said further up the range.
💡 DSPIAE's own care instructions, in plain English

These come from the leaflet in the box. They are short, they are specific, and they appear on no other UK page selling this tool.

If it gets stuck in a cut, pull it out in line — never twist it free. This is the one people get wrong. Twisting a fine cutting jaw sideways to release it warps the edge, and a warped edge no longer meets the flat jaw properly. Withdraw it straight, along the line of the cut.
Wear eye protection. DSPIAE say this explicitly and they are right — a small part under tension leaves the runner at speed. Nobody in this hobby does it and everybody has had one go past their ear.
Keep it dry and oil it. DSPIAE are unusually insistent: never immerse it, wipe off any water immediately, and treat the tool with protective oil or grease after use. A cold, damp hobby room over a British winter is precisely the environment they are warning about, and surface rust on a finely ground edge is not recoverable.
Don't drop it. Sounds obvious. A hard landing on a tiled floor can knock the jaws out of alignment even where nothing looks damaged, and after that it will start marking plastic again with no obvious explanation.
Cut with the middle, not the tip. The tip is the least supported part of the edge. Put the full load through it and that is where damage starts.
⚖️ Honest limitations
Standard opaque model plastic and nothing else. No clear runners, no resin, no metal. Stated at the top and repeated here because it is the one thing on this page that can cost you the tool.
The flagship cuts cleaner. The ST-A 3.0 is the better tool and we would rather say it than have you find out. The honest question is whether the difference is worth the extra money to you, and for a great many people it is not.
It is a finishing tool, not a bulk cutter. Thin gates and stubs. A heavy sprue tree or a thick 3D-print support should meet something else first.
It punishes twisting. Lateral force on a single fine cutting jaw is the fastest way to ruin one. If a part is stubborn, stop and rethink rather than levering.
It will rust if you let it. No stainless here — 60CrV is chosen for wear resistance, not corrosion resistance. It wants wiping and oiling, and no oil is included.
DSPIAE publish no hardness or cut-life figure for this model. They do for the flagship. We are not going to invent one to fill the gap, so treat the durability question as untested-in-public rather than proven.
The cutting jaw is not replaceable. When it is finally done, it is done. That is the trade for a precision-ground single-piece tool at this price.
It has a genuine cutting edge and is not a toy. DSPIAE advise keeping it out of reach of children under 10, and we would go along with that.
