F.D.N.Y. The Fire Buffs Handbook of the New York Fire Department 1900-1975, Gus Johnson, 1977. An excellent reference source for the period 1900 through 1975. Mr. Johnson gives historical information about each of the boroughs, specifically lower Manhattan, "Hell's Hundred Acres". He gives a brief history of Rescue Co. 1 and the Fire Patrol. The principal material of the book is then presented - the major fires broken down by decade. Appendices give the rules for feeding and exercising horses (1869), historic fires and disasters in the New York area and statistics (alarms, multiple alarms, fires and men) for the 75 year period.
