Precision Hand Drill Set
Ten tungsten bits from 0.3 to 1.2 mm, a four-jaw chuck and a case. Complete out of the box.
⚠️ Read this before you think it's faulty
The chuck on this drill uses a reversed thread β€” it tightens in the opposite direction to what you expect. Hold the red section of the handle and turn the collar the way marked on the tool. If you twist it the normal way it will loosen, not grip, and it can feel like something is broken. Nothing is. Once you know, it is a genuine advantage: the direction of the drilling action tends to tighten the chuck rather than work it loose.
πŸ“¦ What's in the box
βœ” 1 Γ— AT-SHD precision hand drill, aluminium alloy body
βœ” 10 Γ— tungsten steel drill bits β€” 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 mm
βœ” 1 Γ— storage case for the drill
βœ” 1 Γ— drill bit storage
Nothing else to buy. Plenty of precision drills ship as a bare handle. This one arrives ready to work, with every bit stored and labelled.
πŸ”‘ Please read this bit β€” it will save you money

A 0.3 mm drill bit is about as thick as two sheets of paper. Tungsten steel is chosen for these bits because it is exceptionally hard and holds an edge, but hardness and brittleness are the same property seen from two sides. These bits cut beautifully and they snap if you use them wrong. That is true of every micro bit from every manufacturer at this size, and it is worth understanding before you start rather than after.

Almost every broken micro bit is broken the same way: side load. The bit is fine going straight down and it fails the moment it is levered sideways. Here is how to avoid that.

1. Start with a dimple. Press a knife tip or a pin into the spot and twist. Without it the bit skates across smooth plastic, and the moment it catches, it catches sideways.
2. Keep it perpendicular. Sight down the axis before you turn. Any tilt is side load, and side load is what breaks bits.
3. Do not lever the part. Once the bit is in the hole, do not tip the drill or twist the workpiece. Come straight out the way you went in.
4. Withdraw to clear swarf. On anything deeper than about twice the bit diameter, back out every few turns. Packed plastic binds the bit, and a bound bit snaps.
5. Light pressure only. Let the edge cut. If it has stopped cutting it is clogged or blunt β€” pushing harder will only break it.
6. Practise on sprue. Every kit comes with a runner of free identical plastic. Two minutes there teaches you the feel before you touch the part that matters.

Treat the smallest bits as consumables. The 0.3 and 0.4 mm will not last forever no matter how careful you are β€” that is the nature of working at that scale, not a defect. Replacement sets are available separately, and we would rather tell you that now than have it be a disappointment later.

βœ… How the tool itself is built
β–ͺ Stainless steel four-jaw chuck. Four jaws grip a round shank far more evenly than the two- or three-jaw arrangements on cheaper handles β€” which matters enormously at 0.3 mm, where an off-centre grip means a wobbling tip and a broken bit. The quick-release action means swapping sizes takes seconds and needs no separate key.
β–ͺ Precision bearing. The head runs on a bearing rather than a plain bushing, which is where the smooth rotation and low tip runout come from.
β–ͺ Three knurled grip sections. Anti-slip texture in three separate bands along the body, so you have purchase wherever your fingers naturally fall.
β–ͺ Magnetic locking. An embedded magnet adds retention and helps keep small components where they should be.
β–ͺ 37 grams. Light enough for long sessions without hand fatigue, with enough aluminium in it to feel like a tool rather than a pen.
πŸ€” Is this the right DSPIAE drill for you?

DSPIAE make several hand drills and it is not obvious which does what. Here is the honest version:

Model Range Best for
AT-SHD
this one
0.3–1.2 mm Fine detail, LED and fibre optic work, rigging, small pins. Bits and case included.
AT-MHD
"Mobius"
1.0–3.1 mm Pinning, magnet recesses, opening barrels. Spin-lock chuck. Bits sold separately.
PT-HD 3.175 mm shank Simple budget handle for bits you already own.
They barely overlap. AT-SHD stops where AT-MHD starts. If you do both fine detail work and pinning, owning both makes sense β€” but neither replaces the other, and you do not need two drills to do one job.
🎯 What this range of sizes is for
LED and fibre optic installation. The 0.5–1.0 mm sizes are exactly what LED legs and optical fibre need. If you are lighting a cockpit, a thruster or a diorama, this is the bore range that job lives in.
Rigging and aerials. Aircraft and ship models need 0.3–0.5 mm holes for wire and thread. Almost nothing else drills that cleanly.
Fine pinning. Small figures and delicate joins where a 1 mm pin would split the part.
Pilot holes. Start small and accurate, then open out with a larger tool if needed.
Surface detail. Bolt heads, vents, drain holes, panel detail β€” the small stuff that reads as scale realism.
Electronics, jewellery and watch work. Not just for models. This bore range is genuinely useful well outside the hobby.

βš–οΈ Honest limitations
It stops at 1.2 mm. This is a fine-detail set. For magnet recesses, pinning with brass rod, or anything in the 1.5–3 mm range you want a different tool.
The finest bits are consumables. Good technique makes them last a long time. It does not make them last forever. If you drill a lot at 0.3 mm, budget for replacements.
The reversed thread takes a moment. It is genuinely better once learned, but the first ten seconds are counter-intuitive.
Built for hobby materials. Plastic, resin, soft woods and thin soft metals. Micro bits this fine are not for steel or hardwood.
