DESCRIPTION –
This
is not a photo, or a stamp, or a postal cover, or a modern or vintage aircraft
model, or a commemorative coin, or a book, or a newspaper.
This
is a genuine actual vintage 1930s souvenir
handkerchief. It is emblazoned with images and a poem to “Mother O’ Mine”.
The
pink silk handkerchief features a lace border, printed images and words, and a multi-color
embroidered border surrounding the coat of arms.
Images
include –
-
Martin M-130 flying boat approaching Oahu, Hawaii, with palm trees and natives
paddling an outrigger canoe below, Diamond Head and a billowing cloud formation
in the background. The print quality is good enough to read“Hawaii Clipper “and “Pan American Airway System” on the side of the fuselage.
-
Coat of Arms of the Kingdom of Hawaii
Both
images are in clear, crisp color and are unique, as noted below.
Pan
Am Flight 229, a Martin M-130 flying boat, the “Hawaii Clipper”, was the first of three M-130 aircraft lost during
flight operations, disappearing over the Pacific Ocean some 500 miles north of
the Philippines. The aircraft had departed Guam the morning of 28 July 1938.
Since
the aircraft disappeared in 1938, one would assume that souvenir handkerchiefs bearing
an image of the “Hawaii Clipper”
would have been discontinued, thus dating this item to the 1938-39 period.
However, who is to say the producer of handkerchiefs knew the image was of the “Hawaii Clipper” or that the aircraft had been lost.
Certainly, this item dates to no later than 1941-42, when the U.S. entered WWII
and international commercial flights were curtailed, especially for casual
travelers.
The
coat of arms is that of the “Kingdom” of
Hawaii, not the “Republic” or “Territory”, which used a similar seal/coat of
arms.
Following
the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, the Provisional Government made its own
modifications to the coat of arms. The crowns, puela, and crossed spears in the
center were eliminated and replaced with eight stars and an eagle with
outstretched wings. The date “1901” was added.
The
handkerchief is in EXCELLENT condition.
It has fold lines/creases.
The
remains of a very light stain are barely visible near the right bottom corner
of the coat of arms.
The
material in this handkerchief DOES NOT GLOW
in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) / “black light”.
Modern
nylon or similar synthetics DO GLOW
in UV light, which indicates post-WWII manufacture.
