The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter.  Translated from the German of Richard Voss and adapted by Ambrose Bierce.  Hardcover, pub. 1967, 80 pages.  In slip case, printed for Members of the Limited Editions Club.  Illustrated and signed by Michel Ciry.  Ciry was a well-know French lithographer and artist from the 1940s into the late 1990s.  Bierce was  well-known for his short stories such as An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and his stories of the Civil War.  The story deals with love, sacrifice, societal prejudice, and the clash between religious duty and human emotion.  A German folk tale about a monk who develops a forbidden love for Benedicta the shunned daughter of the local hangman.  George Macy (1900-1956) founded the Limited Editions Club in 1929 to publish fine illustrated books, mostly classics, in limited numbers for member-subscribers.  Most titles were limited to 1500 copies, were designed and illustrated by leading figures in the graphic arts, and were printed on fine paper. New introductions were written for many titles.  The Limited Editions Club passed its printing jobs around to various fine printers. Shipping weight over 2 pounds.
