A remarkable collection of original caricature art, refered here as *The Sardi's Collection*, captures the lively spirit of Hollywood’s Golden Age. To attract patrons, Sardi Sr. commissioned Russian refugee Alex Gard to create caricatures of famous theatergoers in exchange for free meals, filling the restaurant’s walls with the faces of celebrated actors, directors, and entertainers. Over the years, several alternate Sardi’s locations have opened and closed, each echoing the original’s glamorous appeal. A Los Angeles location on Hollywood Boulevard opened in 1932, becoming a popular spot for celebrities until it was tragically destroyed by fire in 1936. Vincent Sardi Sr. later opened Sardi’s East, a French-food eatery in New York in 1958, which operated until its sale in 1968. His son, Vincent Sardi Jr., attempted a 700-seat Dinner-Theater in Baldwin, New York, which opened in 1974 but closed after two years. Though the locations have since vanished, *The Sardi’s Collection*, featuring many pieces signed by the stars themselves, preserves the enduring legacy of Sardi’s as a cherished institution in the entertainment world. Acquired from a private collection, these artworks celebrate a glamorous era when Sardi’s served as a central hub for industry stars and icons, preserving the charm and allure of classic Hollywood. Alex Gard, John Mackey, Donald Bevan, and Richard Baratz are the four artists to date who have created all the caricatures in the restaurant.
